Professor Sir Mason Durie KNZM CNZM Ngāti Kauwhata, Ngāti Raukawa, Rāngitane.
Distinguished Maori academic, Professor Sir Mason Durie is the inaugural Assistant Vice- Chancellor (Mäori & Pasifika) and Professor of Maori Research and Development at Massey University. He is a leading contributor to national debates on a range of social policy issues, and has published widely, including four books and many journal articles on health policy, Mäori mental health, and indigenous development including: Nga Tai Matatu, Tides of Maori Endurance, (2005), Ngā Kāhui Pou: Launching Māori Futures (2003), Mauri Ora The Dymanics of Maori Health, (2001),Te Mana te Kawanatanga The Politics of Maori Self Determination (1998), Whaiora Maori Health Development (2nd Edition, 1998).
He is the recipient of significant honours, fellowships, and awards including: Hon LL D (University of Otago 2008), Mark Sheldon Award (Royal Australian & NZ College of Psychiatrists 2008), FNZAH (New Zealand Academy of the Humanities 2007), Wunderley Medal (Thoracic Society of Australia and New Zealand 2007), Public Health Champion 2003 (Public Health Association of NZ), Te ORA Mairere Goodall Award for Mäori and Polynesian Health (Mäori Medical Practitioners Association 2003), DLit (Massey University 2002), FRSNZ (1994), QE II Commemorative Medal (for services to Mäori, 1990). From 1986-1988 he was a Commissioner on the Royal Commission on Social Policy. In 2001 he was awarded Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit.
Sir Mason is married to Arohia Durie (nee Kohere) and has four adult children.
